DIY Apple Boxes

Make your own Apple Boxes both full size and mini for under $45 US.
Using only one 4' x 8' sheet of plywood, glue and some nails.
For another $15 US make a case for them.

Mini Apples

Full Apple Box — 12” x 8” x 20”
Half Apple Box — 12” x 4” x 20”
Quarter Apple Box — 12” x 2” x 20”
Eighth Apple Box — 12” x 1” x 20”
Full Mini Apple Box — 12” x 8” x 10”
Half Mini Apple Box — 12” x 4” x 10”
Quarter Mini Apple Box — 12” x 2” x 10”

You can use one 4' x8' sheet of plywood.
Or do as I did and use four 2" x 4' panels.
The difference is the smaller panels are easier to handle.
With the 4' x 8' you will need half as many rough cut pieces (see cut list.)
I used 5/8" CDX you could use AC or ACX grade plywood if you want.
However it will cost more. 
Remember measure twice cut once!

Cut Lists for the Boxes

Tops

Rough cut 8 pieces @ 12" wide by 24" long
From these pieces cut...
(5) 12" x 20" top
(5) 12" x 10" top
 

Side, Middle Support & Ends

For the 8" high boxes

Rough cut (6) pieces @ 7 3/8" wide by 24" long
Or (3) pieces 48" Long from a 4' x8' Sheet
 
From these pieces cut...
(2) 7 3/8" x 20" side
(2) 7 3/8" x 10" side
(6) 7 3/8" x 10 7/8" end & middle support

For the 4" high boxes

Rough cut (6) pieces @ 3 3/8" wide by 24" long
Or (3) pieces 48" from a 4' x8' Sheet
 
From these pieces cut...
(2) 3 3/8" x 20" side
(2) 3 3/8" x 10" side
(6) 3 3/8" x 10 7/8" end & middle support

For the 2" high boxes

Rough cut (6) pieces @1 3/8" wide by 24" long
Or (3) pieces 48" from a 4' x8' Sheet
 
From these pieces cut...
(2) 1 3/8" x 20" side
(2) 1 3/8" x 10" side
(6) 1 3/8" x 10 7/8" end & middle support

Cut List for the Case

Before you cut the case pieces measure your Apple Boxes !
Make sure they will fit! Adjust your case size if necessary.

Note: The case needs to be cut from a 4' x 4' piece of plywood.
Two of the smaller panels will not work.
 
(2) 15 1/2" x 12 3/4 Top & Bottom

These are the measurements I used, your mileage my vary.
As may your box size, so make sure everything fits
before you start gluing and nailing.

You can always get another piece of wood.
However you can not replace a body part.
Please be careful!



Apple Box Assembly

First layout your pieces to make sure they fit together.
Take two side pieces, two end pieces and a middle.
Using a ribbon clamp, clamp them together and check the fit of the top.
Next loosen the clamp and apply glue to the ends of the side and middle pieces.
Re-clamp them and nail them together.
Clean up any glue squeeze out.
Re-check the fit of the top then run a bead of glue
around the top edges of the sides and middle pieces.
line up the top and nail it in place..
Unclamp clean up the glue and it and it's done.
Set aside for the glue to cure then sand and finish.

For the 1" high boxes apply glue to one of the top pieces.
 Lay a second top piece over the first and nail together.
Clean up any glue squeeze out.
Set aside to cure then sand and finish.
 
Note: Your 1" box will actually be 1 1/8" high.

Case Assembly

Dry fit the pieces together and clamp.
Make sure your boxes fit inside!
Apply glue to one of the  long edges of the back.
Align and nail a side piece to it, then glue and nail the second side piece.
Fit a Top/Bottom piece then glue and nail in place.
Carefully rotate the case glue and nail the second Top/Bottom piece.
Check for square set aside to cure, sand and finish
